Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes significant irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. Typically found in the ileum and the colon, the inflammation can occur anywhere along the digestive tract in either one isolated location or different, multiple locations.
During flare ups, when symptoms are most prominent, patients can experience diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramps, fever, fatigue, or loss of appetite among other symptoms.
Though the exact cause of Crohn’s disease has not yet been discovered, the odds of developing the disease increase in anyone who has a relative with a history of the disease.
A colonoscopy or barium x-rays can be used to detect Crohn’s disease.
While certain diets and stress may aggravate Crohn’s symptoms, a dietary change and certain medications can help suppress the flare-up symptoms of Crohn’s disease.
